Biophilic Design: Bringing Nature Indoors
Principles of biophilic design
Biophilic design brings our connection with nature into architecture and interiors. Materials, light, plants and views can create spaces that support comfort and well-being.
Using natural light
Natural light is a central element of biophilic design. Windows, skylights and open layouts can bring daylight into interiors and reduce reliance on artificial lighting.
Plan windows and reflective surfaces to use daylight effectively. Consider glare, heat and the needs of the people using the space alongside access to natural light.
Introducing plants
Houseplants, living walls and rooftop gardens are ways to introduce greenery and a calmer atmosphere.
Select indoor plants for the conditions of the space and the care available. A manageable planting plan can bring natural variety without excessive upkeep.
Working with natural materials
Wood, stone and water add natural textures and sensory qualities that are often missing from urban interiors.
Consider minimally processed materials, reclaimed wood and natural stone. Used in floors, walls and furniture, they add texture and character.
Bringing in views of nature
Views of gardens, courtyards and nature-inspired artwork can create a visual connection with the outdoors and a more restful setting.
Where practical, frame views of nature or introduce a planted atrium or courtyard to strengthen the connection with the outdoors.
Well-being and productivity
Natural elements can support well-being and help create environments suited to focus and rest. Consider the needs and preferences of the people using each space.
In offices, thoughtful natural elements can support a more pleasant working environment. In homes, they can create spaces for rest and recovery.
Challenges and implementation
Biophilic design can bring initial costs and maintenance requirements. Assess these alongside the long-term needs of the people using the space.
Balance the client's aesthetic preferences with practical needs and sustainability. Integrate natural elements carefully so they support the space's purpose.
